The motivation for establishing the network is to achieve common goals in the development and manufacture of microsystems technology products in which multifunctional material composites - particularly those based on plastics - play a key role. The entire production chain is considered, from component design, tool planning and prototype production through to small series production. The design and further development of innovative processes and their possible applications are also taken into account. The network pools the expertise and know-how of its partners from science and industry in order to strengthen networking and thus the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The members of the network currently include eight SMEs from all over Germany, three research institutes (including institutes at Clausthal University of Technology, TU Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft) and two associations. The Clausthal Center for Materials Technology is home to the network management team consisting of three research assistants. During the first project phase, the team takes on tasks such as network development and expansion, network coordination, initiation of research and development projects, support in the application process for publicly funded research projects and the transition to the second phase (a further two years).
